How To Grill Halloumi

Perfectly Grilled Halloumi Recipe

Grilling halloumi is a deliciously simple way to enjoy this salty, squeaky cheese. It’s a great addition to salads, sandwiches, or just on its own with a drizzle of olive oil. Here’s how to grill it perfectly every time.

Ingredients:

  • 250g block of halloumi cheese
  • 1-2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano (optional)
  • A squeeze of lemon juice (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (optional)

Method:

  1. Preheat the Grill:
Heat your grill or barbecue to a medium-high temperature. If you’re using a griddle pan on the stove, heat it over medium-high heat. You want a nice, hot surface to get those grill marks.
  2. Prepare the Halloumi:
Slice the halloumi into 1cm thick slices. This thickness is perfect because it gives enough space for the cheese to soften inside without falling apart.
  3. Brush with Olive Oil:
Lightly brush both sides of the halloumi slices with olive oil. This will help them crisp up beautifully and prevent sticking. If you like a bit of extra flavour, sprinkle a little dried oregano on top as well.
  4. Grill the Halloumi:
Place the slices of halloumi onto the grill or griddle pan. Let them cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until you see nice golden grill marks. Halloumi doesn't melt like other cheeses, so it will hold its shape while getting crispy on the outside.
  5. Finish with a Squeeze of Lemon (Optional):
For a fresh, zesty kick, squeeze a little lemon juice over the grilled halloumi right before serving. It adds a lovely contrast to the salty cheese.
  6. Serve:
Serve the grilled halloumi immediately while it's still warm and crispy. It’s perfect alongside a salad, with some pita bread, or even on its own as a snack. If you’re feeling adventurous, a drizzle of honey or balsamic glaze can also elevate the flavours.

Tips:

  • Halloumi can be a bit salty, so if you're sensitive to salt, you can soak it in water for a few minutes before grilling to reduce the saltiness.
  • If you're grilling on a BBQ, you can skewer the halloumi for easy flipping.

Enjoy your perfectly grilled halloumi!
